First Signs of Dementia – What to Look For and How CLM Community Support Can Help

Dementia can be confronting — not just for the person experiencing it, but for their family as well. Often, the early signs are subtle and easily dismissed as “just getting older.” However, recognising the first signs of dementia early allows families to seek support, put care plans in place, and maintain independence for as long as possible. At CLM Community Support, we work closely with individuals and families across Bundaberg and the Wide Bay Burnett region to provide compassionate, person-centred aged care and dementia support.

What Is Dementia?

Dementia is not a single disease. It’s a term used to describe a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. The most common type is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are other forms including vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia. Dementia is progressive, meaning symptoms gradually worsen over time — but with the right support, people can continue living meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Early Signs of Dementia

Here are some of the most common early warning signs:

1. Memory Loss That Disrupts Daily Life

Forgetting recently learned information, important dates, or repeatedly asking for the same information.

2. Difficulty Completing Familiar Tasks

Struggling with routine activities such as cooking a regular meal, managing finances, or remembering steps in a familiar process.

3. Confusion With Time or Place

Losing track of dates, seasons, or becoming disoriented in familiar surroundings.

4. Problems With Words or Conversation

Difficulty following or joining a conversation, repeating themselves, or struggling to find the right words.

5. Changes in Mood or Personality

Increased anxiety, confusion, suspicion, depression, or withdrawal from social activities.

6. Poor Judgement

Making unusual financial decisions, neglecting personal hygiene, or displaying reduced awareness of safety risks.

If you notice one or more of these signs in yourself or a loved one, it’s important to speak with a GP for assessment.
